Mexican Restaurants
In Denver

Three Michelin stars from one chef, a pozoleria on the New York Times' national list, and how to choose between them.Updated 10 October 2026 · Zach Wennstedt

Where should I go for Mexican food in Denver?

For an occasion, any of the three starred Curiel kitchens: the LoHi pair on 15th Street or the newer RiNo tasting room. For a weeknight, the Ballpark pozoleria with its Bib Gourmand, or Mister Oso for pan-Latin plates. In Cherry Creek, the hotel restaurant Alteño.

No cuisine has done more for Denver's standing in the Michelin Guide than Mexican cooking. Of the city's eight starred restaurants, three are Mexican, and all three belong to one chef.

Denver's Mexican food runs far deeper than the guide: family taquerias, regional specialists and the Colorado green chile that pours over everything, which our what to eat in Denver page covers. This guide sticks to restaurants an independent award body has recognized, so you can see exactly why each is here. For Mexican and Latin cooking, Denver has six in the 2026 guide.

How we picked these

Starred restaurants come first, in the order they were starred, followed by the Bib Gourmands and the recommended restaurant. That sequence is a suggestion rather than a ranking, and no restaurant pays us anything.

The starred trio

One chef, three stars

  1. One Michelin Star

    Alma Fonda Fina

    LoHi · 2556 15th St.

Curiel's first Denver star arrived in 2024, and it broke a pattern: until then every starred room in Colorado served a set tasting menu. Tortillas made from striped blue-and-yellow corn, ceviche and aguachile have been among the dishes reported from its kitchen.

  2. One Michelin Star

    Mezcaleria Alma

    LoHi · 2550 15th St.

The neighbour at 2550 pairs shareable dishes with an unusually long agave-spirits list. It took its star in 2025, a year after its sibling, making Curiel the only Colorado chef with two stars on adjacent addresses.

  3. One Michelin Star New 2026

    Milpero

    RiNo · 3455 Ringsby Ct.

The group's set-menu restaurant off Brighton Boulevard, and Colorado's single new star of 2026. Choose it for an occasion meal, and plan the booking well ahead.

Curiel's group also runs Alteño in Cherry Creek and Cozobi Fonda Fina in Boulder, a Bib Gourmand covered by our sister site Best Restaurant Colorado. The James Beard Foundation shortlisted him for its Mountain region chef award in 2026.

Value and neighborhood picks

Pozole, Latin plates and a hotel dining room

  1. Bib Gourmand

    La Diabla Pozole y Mezcal

    Ballpark · 2233 Larimer St.

A pozoleria on Larimer Street in Ballpark, opened in July 2021, with red, green, white and black pozoles and a vegan version, plus mezcal. The New York Times included it in its 2023 list of the 50 best restaurants in the United States, and it holds a Bib Gourmand. 5280 has reported that it does not take reservations.

  2. Bib Gourmand

    Mister Oso

    RiNo · 3163 Larimer St.

Pan-Latin cooking on Larimer in RiNo, a Bib Gourmand, with a menu 5280 describes as rotating tacos, Peruvian-style cebiche and crudo, plus strong vegetarian options.

  3. Recommended

    Alteño

Cherry Creek · 249 Clayton St.

Curiel's fourth concept, on the ground floor of the Clayton Hotel and Members Club in Cherry Creek. Recommended since 2025 and the easiest of his Denver restaurants to plan around.

How to choose

  • For an occasion: Milpero or Alma Fonda Fina's chef's counter.
  • For mezcal: Mezcaleria Alma, or La Diabla if you want a walk-in.
  • For a group on a budget: La Diabla or Mister Oso, both Bib Gourmands.
  • In Cherry Creek: Alteño.

Booking the Curiel restaurants

Because three of the four Curiel restaurants carry a star, they are the most contested Mexican tables in the city. Book the counter rooms as soon as their windows open, and keep Alteño in mind as the most flexible of the group. If a starred table is gone, the bar is often the best second chance; arrive close to opening and ask. For walk-in-friendly options, the two Bib Gourmands are the better bet, though a busy game night near Coors Field can fill Ballpark quickly.

Beyond the guide

Green chile and the rest of the story

Inspectors have only sampled a sliver of the city's Mexican cooking. Denver's defining dish, the pork green chile ladled over breakfast burritos and smothered plates, lives mostly in diners and taquerias that no guide lists. The chiles themselves come from Pueblo, about two hours south, where the harvest and roasting season runs from August into October.

If you want to go deeper, our what to eat in Denver page covers green chile and the state's produce, and our statewide regional food guide explains where and when to find Pueblo chiles. For the full list of recognized restaurants by area, use the directory.
